Plinth is sea-facing independent art shop and gallery based in Cliftonville, Margate, UK.
Housing a carefully considered collection of interesting objects, periodicals, publications, artist editions and unique concept driven products. Plinth is home to a wealth of contemporary wares by artists and designers with a drive to support the growing creative scene with a strong core selection of local makers.
Hard-to-find and one-of-a-kind objects and furniture unearthed on trips to all corners of the country add to the curiosity shop aesthetic of an ever-changing mix of old and new.
Plinth Space is the new gallery area, accessible via double doors to the rear of the shop, which aims to give further exposure to creative talents, crackpot ideas, wondrous projects and unexpected events throughout the calendar year by a warm wealth of surrounding artists, writers, creatives, friends, foes, inventors, makers and magicians.
Plinth was founded in June 2015 by Leon Hatcher who has a strong background in the art world, having worked for the White Cube gallery across several of it's site in London for many years, alongside curating and creating shows and events of his and fellow friends work within the creative community of the capital.
Finding a way to marry art and creativity into everyday lives became more and more important, as gallery percentages soared with studio rents and emerging into a creative community capable of supporting new talents felt missing.
Wanting to find the headspace for his own practice as well being drawn to the seaside (where he grew up, hailing from the Isle of Wight) led to finding the spot in Margate that would become Plinth. As the entire community leapt to help create the space and bring their creations to show and sell, a home had been found. A place where contributing to a community of like minded, open minded creative imagineers makes a difference, and marrying art into every day life, design and mind-set is an ever evolving adventure.
